Time perfeccionists Porto Cálem was founded in 1859 by António Alves Cálem. Profiting the free commercial regime ruling in the Demarked Region of Douro, soon António Alves Cálem decided to orientate the firm’s focus towards the other side of the ocean – Brazil. “Cálem’s initial business was to ship Portuguese table wine to Brazil. To avoid empty boats coming back to Portugal, they used to bring back wood for casks and this resulted in the building up of a cooperage company, which in turn led to them storing and maturing port. They thus became port shippers by accident rather than design.” (Howkins, 1982, 84) In a time where the exportations to England were the most privileged, the company started to develop with Brazil commercial exchanges of Port Wine for exotic wood. That was the beginning of a never ending process. Since then Porto Cálem knew no boundaries for its exportations. In order to warrant the Company’s furtherance by the hand of family members, António Alves Cálem Junior was named as partner in the company, changing its social designation to Cálem & Filho S.A. A. A. Cálem Junior knew how to continue his father’s efforts by devoting his heart and soul to the company. Rapidly he became a successful enterpriser as well as an honorable citizen with an active position and role in society. The astuteness in his projects and the altruism in his acts were important characteristics of his personality. By the year of his death, 1932, A. A. Cálem Junior left to his sons a steady company. The coming generations have always known how to honor his name by developing and increasing the company’s worldwide awareness and respecting its historical background and quality philosophy. In 1998, Porto Cálem was integrated in Sogevinus Fine Wines, a company with perfect conditions to continue the work developed for so many years, producing Fine Ports. The goal continues the same – to expand the exportation of the precious nectar, produced with so much affection. The ancient knowledge has since then been allied to nowadays technological newest in the pursuit of better Ports.
